Objects & Provenance
-
Most of the objects come from the stock of the art dealership Karl-Heinz Krieg. The art dealer Karl-Heinz Krieg travelled to West Africa every year between 1960 and 2012, where he acquired and documented art and crafts. Today the art dealership is continued as a family business under the name Heiss, Koch, Krieg & Krieg GbR. You can find more in our archive and photo archive.
-
Many pieces were used in everyday life or in ceremonies in West Africa and bear corresponding signs of use. These are part of such objects and tell a piece of their history. For some objects, earlier use cannot be established with certainty. We also offer more recent pieces and works made specifically by craftspeople and artists. On request, we are happy to provide more detailed information.
-
Almost all objects were acquired in person on site in West Africa: partly through African dealers, partly directly from original owners, and partly commissioned from craftspeople and artists. Commissioned works are identified as such in the object description. When old objects were offered for sale by their owners, this happened for a wide range of reasons, such as financial need, a change of religion, or because a damaged object was to be replaced by a new one.
-
The age of many objects can only be estimated approximately. Where we have information, we are happy to provide it on request.
-
Yes. Dimensions are given for every object. On request, we will send you detailed photos and a description of the condition (cracks, repairs, losses).
-
Many of our old objects have been carefully restored. We tell you about restorations in the object description. On request, we will send you detail photos of the affected areas.
-
You will receive an invoice with a photo of the object for every purchase. For higher-priced objects, we can prepare a detailed description on request, where possible, with information on provenance and collection history. For some objects, early photographs from the archive exist that document their age. We are happy to send these to you on request. Just ask us.
-
If an object already has a base, this is normally stated in the object description. Most of our bases were made in Germany. Until the 1980s, mainly wooden bases were used; later, these were partly replaced by high-quality steel bases. Suitable steel bases and mounts for wooden figures, masks, bronzes and terracottas are offered by Hermann Becker.
